In retaliation for the American sacking of York in Upper Canada the previous year, 1814 saw the British and Colonial forces under General Ross unleash the Chesapeake Campaign.
Loyalist Forces from all over the colonies invaded Washington and burned the Capitol to the ground. Although largely a diversionary tactic to see the Americans halt their invasion of the North, the burning of the White House is now the stuff of legend and an event that gave rise to many tall-tales.
To this date, it remains the only time since the Revolutionary War that saw a foreign power capture and occupy the capitol of the United States, and is now a humorous historical footnote between nations who consider themselves among the closest of Allies.
A humbling moment in history that reminds the now 'Leading Nation of the Free World' that they weren't always 'Top-Dog'...
